Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher to 'roll with it', says would love a reunion

SANTA MONICA (Reuters) - There is "nothing more" Liam Gallagher would love than to have a reunion of Oasis, the British rock band he once fronted with his older brother Noel.

Formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis had its heyday at the height of Britpop fame in the 1990s, with hits such as "Don't Look Back In Anger" and "Wonderwall”.

1991년 맨체스터에서 결성된, 오아시스는 1990년대 브릿팝의 인기와 더불어, "Don't Look Back In Anger”와 “Wonderwall” 같은 히트곡과 함께 전성기를 보냈다.

But the brothers' famous feuds led to a split-up in 2009, after tempers flared at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris, prompting Noel to quit the group.

그러나 형제의 유명한 불화는 파리에서 이루어진 록 앙 센 페스티벌에서 폭발하여, 노엘이 밴드를 그만두게 되면서 2009년의 해체로까지 이어졌다.

"He thinks he's the man and I think I'm the man, do you know what I mean?" Gallagher said, shedding light on the reasons for the breakup with a tag referring to the group's 1997 album.

In an interview with cbcmusic during his American tour, Noel Gallagher talked about lots of things, his new album, The Stone Roses, brother Liam and more.

On the new album: 새 앨범에 대하여

Regarding the new album, Noel said: "Finished half of it, I think. We've done six tracks, they're not mixed. I'd say they're all right. It's a very casual affair that's going on. We record it during breaks in tours and [producer and electronic musician] David [Holmes]'s film commitments. We've been at it for nearly two years and I think we've still only done about four weeks [of recording]."

새 앨범과 관련해서, 노엘은 이렇게 말했다: "내 생각엔, 거의 절반을 끝내놓은 것 같다. 여섯 트랙을 끝내놨는데, 아직 믹싱은 안 한 상태다. 곡들은 다 괜찮다고 해두겠다. 아주 사소한 일들이 진행되고 있는 상태다. 내 투어와 [프로듀서이자 일렉트로닉 음악가인] 데이비드 [홈즈]의 영화 일을 잠깐 쉬는 사이에 이 앨범을 녹음했다. 이 작업을 한 지 거의 2년 정도 됐고 내 생각엔 [녹음을 하는 데] 앞으로 4주 정도는 더 필요할 것 같다."

When asked why it is taking so long to finish it all, Noel Gallagher said:" Well, I'm f--king on tour and he's over in Hollywood or whatever on Earth he does when he's not working for me and then it's like, “Oh, I've got a week free are you around” and it's like, “No, I'm not, I'm in the f--king Gabon playing in the f--king jungle for someone.” And then you manage to cobble together a few days here and there."

"It's difficult to talk about something when half of it's not been written yet. I can tell you it's not, thus far, an electronic record. That's all I'm willing to say about it."

"아직 절반도 써놓지 않은 어떤 것을 가지고 뭐라고 이야기하기는 힘들다. 그렇지만, 지금까지는, 일렉트로닉 음반은 아니라고 말해둘 수 있다. 내가 해줄 수 있는 말은 그게 다다."

On the Stone Roses new music: 스톤 로지즈의 신보에 대하여

"I heard it in [Stone Roses bassist] Mani's kitchen while Mani and his wife were staring at me intently — which was quite off-putting, I must say. But I thought it was f--king great, to be honest. I'm very pleased for them. Good for them. It sounds like them."

On the documentary 다큐멘터리에 대하여

It's good. I think fans are gonna love it. Brought back a lot of funny memories and how big we were and what an impact we made on people's lives and blah, blah, blah and all that. I'm not sure if anybody's gonna f--king learn anything from it.

좋은 영화다. 팬들이 좋아할 거라고 생각한다. 아주 많은 웃긴 순간들을 떠올리게 하고 우리가 얼마나 거대했었고 우리가 사람들의 인생에 얼마나 영향을 줬었고 어쩌고 저쩌고 이러쿵 저러쿵 뭐 그러는 내용이다. 거기서 누가 존---나 뭘 배울 수 있을 거 같다는 생각은 잘 안 든다.

On Liam calling him a potato 리암이 감자라고 부르는 것에 대하여

Liam calls people lots of things. One shouldn't take seriously the ramblings of a f--king buffoon. I have no idea, I guess you'd have to somehow get an interview with Liam. But as he's f--king retired I'm not sure that's going to happen any time soon.

리암은 사람들을 아주 많은 방식으로 부르곤 한다. 그런 존--나 얼간이 같은 새끼가 아무 말이나 하고 있는 걸 진지하게 받아들이고 있으면 안 된다. 내 생각엔 당신이 어떻게든 리암하고 인터뷰를 해봐야 할 것 같다. 그치만 그 새끼가 존---나 은퇴나 하고 앉아있는 마당에 과연 그럴 수나 있을지 난 잘 모르겠다.

On an Oasis reunion 오아시스 재결합에 대하여

I don't think there'll ever be an Oasis reunion. I'd do it for the money but I'm not sure the singer would be able to pull it off. He wasn't that good last time I played with him, d'ya know what I mean? If you're gonna come back you've got to be at least f--king average. Now myself, I practise a lot so I'd be quite confident I could pull it off but the rest of them? They don't seem to be doing much these days.

나는 어떤 식으로든 오아시스 재결합이 있을 거라고 생각하지 않는다. 나야 돈 때문에라면 하겠지만 우리 싱어가 잘 해낼 수 있을지 감이 안 잡힌다. 그 인간하고 마지막으로 공연했을 때는 그렇게 잘하진 못하던데, 무슨 말인지 알겠는가? 만약 다시 돌아오게 된다면 적어도 망---할 평균은 할 수 있어야 한단 소리다, 이제 나로 말할 거 같으면, 나야 엄청나게 연습해서 이제 꽤나 해낼 수 있는 자신감이 붙었다지만 나머지들은? 그 인간들은 그렇게까지 할 수 있을 것처럼 보이지 않는다.

리암이 요 며칠 아일랜드 메이요에 머물렀다는 건 아시는 분들은 알고 계실 겁니다. 그 곳에 있던 중에 pub crawl을 다니면서 어떤 펍에서 어쿠스틱 공연을 했던 모양인데, 오늘 그 영상이 업로드. 제가 들어본 노래는 아니라서 아무래도 새 노래가 아닐까 하고 있습니다.

여기엔 폴 형님과 아들 레논도 함께 했었다고 하고, 같이 사진 찍고 함께 있었던 모 팬의 증언으로는 Do you wanna be the spaceman이라든지 Cigarette In Hell (오아시스의 Go Let It Out 싱글 b-side) 의 코러스를 불렀었다는 이야기도 있네요. (아래 캡처)

Teenage Cancer Trust는 영국의 오랜 자선행사 공연 이벤트 중 하나로, 유명 아티스트들이 출연해 소아암을 위한 자선 기금을 모으고 공연을 하는 자리입니다. 리암 갤러거는 그 이전 비디 아이와 함께 2011년에 이 자리에 선 적이 있습니다.

이 공연은 더 후의 50주년을 맞이하는 헌정 공연으로, 그 외에도 에디 베더, 매닉 스트리트 프리처스의 제임스 딘 브래드필드, 리키 윌슨, 더 스트라입스(The Strypes), 톰 오델 등이 함께했습니다.

더 후의 마이 제너레이션을 부르는 건 2005~6년 이후로 굉장히 오랜만의 일이네요. 특히 그 이전에 공연이 없었다는 점을 고려해보면 정말 가뭄에 단비 같은 공연.

What were your initial ideas for what the second album would be?

두 번째 앨범에 대한 첫 아이디어는 무엇이었는가?

Liam: We demoed all the songs that are on this album, and they were good; we could have gone in and made it like that and it would have been stuck in that ’60s kinda rut - but I like that kind of thing. So it would have still been good, but I guess it would have been ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding Part Two’, you know what I mean? We’re always up for a bit of change - we’re always up for doing something different - but until it’s in front of your face and your ears, it’s hard to tell what you want to do. So with [previous producer] Dave Sardy, Scott, our new manager, he said, "Look, you don’t want to go in with the normal producer, you’ve got to go with someone who’s a little bit out of your comfort zone." I went, "Cool. Let’s f*ckin’ check it out."

리암: 우린 이 앨범에 쓸 모든 곡을 데모로 만들었는데, 모든 곡들이 다 좋았어; 우리는 그대로 이 곡들을 판에 박힌 60년대스러운 곡으로 만들 수도 있었지 - 근데 난 그런 것들을 좋아한단 말이야. 그러니까 여전히 좋은 곡이긴 하지만, 내 생각에는  ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding Part Two’가 돼간다 싶었단 말이지, 무슨 말인지 알겠어? 우리는 언제나 변화하고자 하는 사람들이라고 - 우린 언제든 뭔가 다른 걸 하려고 하지 -  그렇지만 뭔가 당장 코 앞에서 듣고 있을 때는, 뭘 하고 싶은지를 말하기는 힘든 법이거든. 그래서 [전 프로듀서] 데이브 사디와 함께, 스콧이라고, 우리 새 매니저가 있는데, 그 사람이 "이봐요, 당신 평범한 프로듀서를 원하진 않죠, 당신은 뭔가 당신의 안전 지대에서 살짝 벗어난 그런 누군가가 필요해요." 라기에 난 그랬어, "좋아. 존*나 누군지 한번 확인해보자고."

The first day I met [Dave Sitek] was in the studio. I liked a bit of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - I’ve never really heard much about his band (TV On The Radio) - and then he just started f*ckin’ playing us what he’d done to [the demo of] ‘Flick Of The Finger’. I thought, "F*ckin’ yes." It had a dark and menacing edge to it that we didn’t have. And then when he got ‘Soul Love’ out, he’d started putting all these atmospherics on it and cosmic f*ckin’ shit - ambient stuff that we wouldn’t normally do. So that’s when we thought, "Yeah, this is it, man."

내가 처음 그를 [데이브 시텍] 만났을 때였어. 난 Yeah Yeah Yeahs의 곡 몇 개는 좋아해 - 그 사람의 밴드 (티비 온 더 레이디오TV On The Radio) 는 한번도 들어본 적 없었지만 - 그러고나서는 그가 그냥 우리 앞에서 자기가 작업해놓은 [데모]  ‘Flick Of The Finger’를 바로 틀어줬어. 나는, "씨*발 이거다." 싶었지. 우리한테는 없는 어둡고 위협적인 엣지가 있었어. 그런 다음엔 그 사람이 ‘Soul Love’ 를 만들 때는, 그가 그 수많은 모든 분위기들하고 존*나 우주 같은 뭐 그런 - 평소 우리라면 하지 않았을 무슨 앰비언트 같은 걸 집어 넣기 시작했지. 그래서 그 때가 우리가 "그래, 바로 이거야." 라고 생각했을 때야.

How do you define what a Beady Eye song is?

비디 아이의 음악을 정의해본다면 어떻게 할 수 있겠는가?

Liam: A Beady Eye song has got to have attitude, it’s got to have a great melody, great chords - you’ve got to be able to play it on acoustic, you know what I mean? That’s how I measure a good song: if you can f*ckin’ sit there and strum it on the acoustic guitar in your house to your dogs and it still sounds good, then that’s the sound of a good song. Then once you put all the other shit on it, then obviously it gets better, I guess.

리암: 비디 아이의 노래는 애티튜드가 있고, 아주 좋은 멜로디도 있고, 코드도 훌륭해 - 꼭 어쿠스틱으로 쳐봐야 한다고, 무슨 소린지 알겠어? 그게 바로 좋은 노래를 알아내는 법이야: 만약 존*나 바로 저기 앉아서 어쿠스틱 기타 들고 니네 집 개한테 쳐줄 때도 듣기 좋으면, 그게 바로 좋은 노래의 사운드인 거야. 그런 다음에 한번 딱 다른 것들을 넣기 시작하면, 분명히 또 더 좋아진다고, 내 생각엔. 

Andy: At the beginning of the demo session we were like, "Let’s direct ourselves at a cross between [George Harrison’s] ‘Wonderwall Music’ soundtrack and ‘All Things Must Pass’." We had a sort of orchestral Simon and Garfunkel epicness.

앤디: 데모 세션을 시작할 때는 우리는 마치, "우리 [조지 해리슨의] 'Wonderwall Music' 사운드 트랙과 'All Things Must Pass' 사이의 무언가를 만들어 보자" 는 느낌이었어. 사이먼 앤 가펑클 같은 장대한 느낌의 오케스트라 같은 것도 있었고.

Gem: Yeah, Liam was banging on about Simon and Garfunkel a lot, but what we actually wanted from the lyrics and the melodies was just real strong songs, man. Emotion, directness, vulnerability, hope, broken hearts, paranoia; the usual kind of adult emotions that you pick up.

겜: 맞아, 리암은 사이먼 앤 가펑클 같은 걸 엄청 많이 계속 하고 있었거든, 그렇지만 우리가 그 가사들과 멜로디로 진짜 하려고 했던 것은 그냥 정말로 강렬한 곡이야, 감성, 단순명쾌함, 연약함, 희망, 부서진 마음들, 피해망상 같은; 보통 성인의 감성이라고 했을 때 꼽는 것들 있잖아.

Andy: With the first album we would have been saying, "Right, we need rock ‘n’ roll. It needs to be lairy, lean and mean. We don’t want to have any indulgent bits on it - not too many guitar solos - we just want it to be arranged to play the fuck out of live." So that was the message there. The message now was more like a bit of headspace. Dave saw that in the tunes and he brought a whole lot of ambience to it as well that we wouldn’t have got near without him. Dave added the ambience, the chaos, the invention, the questioning - we questioned every tune on the day. We came out with an amazing record that at times is space rock, other times is ambient, at times it is like Hawkwind, and at other times it’s like Oasis or Beady Eye’s first album; it kind of runs through the whole spectrum.

앤디: 첫번째 앨범을 할 동안에는 우리는 계속, "맞아, 우린 로큰롤이 필요해. 자신만만하고, 탄탄하고 기가 막힌 곡들이어야 해. 우린 그 어떤 무르고 너그러운 요소는 넣고 싶지 않아 - 기타 솔로도 너무 넣지 말고 - 우린 그저 라이브에서 존나게 칠 수 있도록 만들고 싶어." 였어. 그러니까 그게 바로 메시지였지. 지금의 메시지는 좀 더 뭐랄까 정신 상태에 가까워. 데이브가 그걸 곡들에게서 보았고 우리가 그가 없었더라면 아마 그 비슷한 거라도 내지 못했을 그 모든 분위기들을 가져다 주었지. 데이브는 곡들에 분위기, 혼돈, 독창성, 의문점을 넣었어 - 우리는 그 날 그 날 모든 곡들에 의문을 가졌지. 우리는 어떤 때엔 스페이스 록, 어떤 때에는 앰비언트, 또 어떤 때는 Hawkwind 같기도 하고, 또 다른 때에는 마치 오아시스나 비디 아이의 첫 앨범처럼 느껴지는 그런 굉장한 앨범을 갖고 나왔어; 마치 그 모든 스펙트럼을 가로지르는 듯한 느낌이야.
