Director Mat Whitecross speaks to the former Oasis frontman about the band’s whirlwind early years.

감독 맷 화이트크로스가 전 오아시스 프론트맨과 함께 밴드의 폭풍 같던 초기 시절에 대해 이야기해보았다.

Initially I was asked about making Supersonic through one of the film’s producers, Simon Halfon. He rang me to see if I was a fan and my first question was, ‘Who’s doing it?’ From what I knew, if Noel’s doing it, Liam’s not doing it, but as it turned out they were both keen. When it came to meeting Liam I was absolutely shitting myself because everyone says don’t meet your heroes and I’d read all the stories. He immediately wanted to know what the angle was, whether the film was going to have a villain and could it be him. That wasn’t my intention at all – it’s a celebration of what happened to the band during those early years, but also a film that doesn’t pull any punches.

애초에 나는 영화 '수퍼소닉'의 제작에 대해서는 이 영화의 프로듀서 중 하나였던, Simon Halfon에게 요청을 받았었다. 그는 내게 전화를 걸어 내가 팬인지 여부를 물었고 거기에 대한 내 첫 질문은, '누가 이걸 하는 거죠?' 였다. 내가 알고 있는 대로라면, 만약 노엘이 한다면, 리암은 빠지는 것일텐데, 일이 돌아가는 모양으로 봐서는 두 사람 모두 관심이 있어 보였다. 리암을 만나기로 했을 때는 모든 사람들이 네 영웅을 만나면 앞으로 모든 이야기들을 다 읽게 될 것이기 때문에 만나면 안 된다고 말하는 통에 완전히 바지에 지릴 지경이었다. 리암은 곧바로 이 영화의 시점이 무엇인지, 영화가 어떻게 진행되든지간에 악당이 있다면 그것이 자기가 되지는 않을지 여부를 알고 싶어했다. 그 부분은 애초에 내가 관심 있는 부분이 아니었다 - 이 영화는 밴드의 초기 시절에 일어났던 그 모든 일들에 대한 축전이 되겠지만, 그런 사정 같은 걸 봐줄 작품은 아니었기 때문이다.

The new documentary Oasis In Their Own Words brings together archive material to tell the BBC’s story of the Manchester band which defined a generation.

새 다큐멘터리 Oasis In Their Own Words는 아카이브 자료들을 통해 한 세대를 정의한 맨체스터 밴드에 대해 BBC가 바라본 이야기를 담고 있다.

Charting Oasis‘ early success with interviews from Later…With Jools Holland and Zoe Ball on the nineties youth magazine show The O-Zone, it follows their progression to Knebworth and the same programme’s special from that weekend, and provides a stark reminder of just how omnipresent the Gallagher brothers were in the British press during the weeks and months after those gigs, Jeremy Vine and Jeremy Paxman providing a running Newsnight commentary on the aftermath of Liam’s US tour no-show, the former doing so with typical incredulity.

Later…With Jools Holland 인터뷰와 Zoe Ball이 진행하는 90년대 젊은이들을 위한 매거진 쇼 The O-Zone에서의 인터뷰를 통해 오아시스가 이룬 초기 성공을 추적하고, 넵워스까지의 여정과 앞에서 이야기한 같은 쇼에서 바로 그 주에 진행된 스페셜 방송이 이어진다. 그리고 갤러거 형제가 그 공연 이후 이어지는 몇 주 몇 달간 영국 언론에서 얼마나 자주 보여졌는지가 암시되며,  Jeremy Vine과 Jeremy Paxman이 전하는 리암의 미국 투어 무단 이탈의 여파에 대한 Newsnight 코멘터리가 이어진다. 전자의 경우 전형적인 불신이 담긴 모습으로 진행된다.

Like so many bands, Top Of The Pops signposts their career and the documentary throughout as the second, 21st century incarnation of the band is neatly introduced back on Later…With Jools Holland with the fondly remembered hour-long special of 2000.

다른 수많은 밴드들처럼, Top Of The Pops는 그들 커리어의 이정표가 되며 또한 이 다큐멘터리가 부가적으로 다루고 있는, 밴드의 21세기 모습이 Later…With Jools Holland 쇼의 2000년 1시간 스페셜의 애틋한 모습들을 통해 나란히 소개된다.

While there’s nothing new for diehard fans to get their teeth into, it’s a neat compilation of interviews and news-pieces which acts as a light appetiser to the feature length rockumentary Supersonic which premieres this weekend.

물론 덕후 팬들에게는 그다지 새로울 것 없는 내용이겠지만, 이 다큐멘터리는 이번 주 중 프리미어를 진행하는 장편 록큐멘터리 Supersonic을 감상하기 전 가벼운 애피타이저로 즐길 수 있는 인터뷰와 뉴스 영상들의 깔끔한 컴필레이션이다.

On the 20th Anniversary of their iconic Knebworth concerts, the Oasis documentary Supersonic confirms its theatrical and home entertainment release dates.

넵워스 공연의 20주년 기념일에 맞춰, 오아시스의 다큐멘터리 영화 Supersonic이 극장 및 가정용 개봉일을 확정했다.

Supersonic documents the rise of one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of our time.
Taking an in depth look at the often tumultuous relationship between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, two of the finest rock stars this country has ever produced; the film opens with the formation of Oasis in 1991 and culminates with their record breaking gig at Knebworth on 10th August 1996 – twenty years ago today.

With unprecedented access to the band, commentary from family and contributors from the time and incredible unseen archive material, the film follows the infamous group through the chaos of the early nineties in a thrilling documentary that pays homage to a band that influenced a generation and defined the sound of an era.

전례 없는 접근권을 이용, 그 당시의 가족과 공헌자들의 해설과 더불어 지금까지 본 적 없었던 아카이브 자료들을 통해,  영화는 한 무명 그룹이 90년대 초의 혼돈을 뚫고 나가는 과정을 따라나가며 한 세대에 영향을 주고 당대의 음악을 정의한 밴드를 위해 오마주를 바치는 짜릿한 다큐멘터리이다.

The film will be in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 2nd October this year, with a special event broadcast via satellite into theatres nationwide. It will go on general release from 14th October.

영화는 영국과 아일랜드 기준 올해 10월 2월에 극장 개봉 예정이며, 극장 내에서 위성 중계를 통한 스페셜 이벤트 방송이 예정되어 있다. 일반 개봉일은 10월 14일로 예정되어 있다.

The Oasis Documentary Supersonic is due out on 2 October and according director Mat Whitecross the aim was to capture all the excitement of Oasis’s meteoric rise from early gigs in Manchester in ’93, through to their peak at Knebworth in August ’96, when they played to a quarter of a million people. “The problem we had,” Whitecross says, “was that, back then, not everything was filmed, unlike today, where everyone’s got their phones out.” However, the unseen footage includes scenes from Oasis’s disastrous 1994 gig at LA’s Whisky A Go Go, as well as the recording of Champagne Supernova.

오아시스 다큐멘터리 ⟨수퍼소닉⟩은 올해 10월 2일 (*영국 기준) 개봉을 앞두고 있으며, 감독 맷 화이크로스에 따르면 본 영화는 93년의 맨체스터 초기 공연에서부터, 96년 넵워스에서 20여 만 관중 앞에서 공연하는 것으로 정점을 찍기까지 이어지는 오아시스의 급부상과 그에 따른 모든 즐거움을  포착하는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있다고 한다. There are also unseen clips from rehearsals at Oasis’s debut TV performance on The Word, and from Knebworth, which has still never been fully documented.

There are no talking-head interviews, just voices narrating the footage you see unfolding. The effect, says Whitecross, “is like Liam and Noel are in the same room, like they’re having a conversation.”

본인이 화면에 출연해 면대면으로 이루어지는 인터뷰는 없을 것이며, 그저 펼쳐지는 영상들을 보는 사이에 목소리 나레이션이 깔리는 식이 될 것이라고 한다. 화이트크로스는 이렇게 말했다. "마치 리암과 노엘이 같은 방에 있는 듯한 느낌이 들 것이다. 마치 두 사람이 대화를 나누는 것처럼 말이다."

The upcoming Oasis documentary film from the makers of Amy and Senna has been given a title and release schedule.

영화 Amy와 Senna의 제작자들이 선사하는 다가올 오아시스 다큐멘터리 영화의 제목과 개봉 스케줄이 발표됐다.

Named after the band’s debut single ‘Supersonic‘, the movie has been set for a cinema release in October. It will follow the Oasis story from their earliest days in Manchester before signing to Creation Records in 1993, through their rapid rise to becoming the biggest band in the world by the time they played two nights at Knebworth Park in the summer of 1996.

밴드의 데뷔 싱글 앨범을 딴 영화 'Supersonic'은, 올해 10월 중 개봉될 예정이다. 이 영화는 오아시스가 1993년 크리에이션 레코드와 계약하기 전 맨체스터에서 보낸 초기 시절부터 시작해, 가파른 상승세를 타고 당대의 세계에서 가장 큰 밴드가 되어 1996년 여름날 넵워스 공원에서 두 번의 공연을 하기까지의 이야기를 다룬다.

“The love and the vibe and the  passion and the rage and the joy that are coming from the crowd, if anything, that’s what Oasis was,” Noel Gallagher says.

Liam Gallagher was in Cannes last night to promote Oasis documentary Supersonic, from Amy duo James Gay-Rees, who is producing, and Asif Kapadia, who is executive producer.

They were attending a party at Villa Saf Saf hosted by Lorton Entertainment, who financed the project.

The Amy producer discussed his upcoming Oasis documentary at an event in London.

Producer James Gay-Rees, who recently picked up an Oscar for Asif Kapadia-directed Amy, has spoken about his upcoming documentary on iconic band Oasis.

프로듀서 제임스 게이-리스는, 최근 아지프 카파디아가 감독한 Amy를 통해 오스카 상을 수상한 바 있으며, 이제는 상징적이라고 할 수 있는 밴드 오아시스의 다가오는 다큐멘터리에 대해 입을 열었다.

“[Liam and Noel Gallagher are] brilliant to work with, both completely insane and hysterically funny,” said Gay-Rees, speaking today at the BASE [formerly BVA] Insight Forum in London.

"[리암과 노엘 갤러거는] 놀랍도록 같이 일하기 좋았으며, 두 사람 모두 완전히 미친데다 배꼽 빠지게 웃긴 사람들이다." 게이-리스는, 오늘 런던에서 열린 BASE [전 BVA] Insight Forum에서 말했다.

“It’s a really interesting anatomy of how two complete chancers - in their own words - became the biggest band in the world from a standing start in just two years, despite themselves.”

The producer revealed that brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher - whom he admitted “can’t be in the same room as each other” - approached him and Asif Kapadia (who is exec producing) with the idea for the film, which Mat Whitecross (The Road To Guantanamo) will direct.

Mint Pictures’ Fiona Neilson and Nemperor’s Simon Halfon are also producing the film, which is currently untitled.

Gay-Rees is also producing Kapadia’s next documentary Maradona, about the mercurial Argentinian footballer.
